How to Make Easy Peasy DIY Sweet Potato Treats

Patrick Mull |

How do you let a dog know you are thankful for everything they bring to your life? With treats, of course! And what better way to celebrate the blessings of your dog’s companionship than to make them treats the two of you can share.

With it being the Thanksgiving season, you probably have sweet potatoes on your grocery list, right? Well, go ahead and grab a couple extra. You can transform them into tasty treats for your furry friend.

Using only a single ingredient, you can easily make your pup healthy sweet potato treats from the comfort of your own kitchen. Here’s a simple step-by-step tutorial.

Easy Peasy DIY Sweet Potato Treats

  • Choose two sweet potatoes from the many varieties available. I went with one garnet sweet potato and one satsumaimo (Japanese sweet potato).

  • Thoroughly wash your sweet potatoes to remove any dirt.

  • Steam the sweet potatoes until you can easily push a toothpick through the flesh of the vegetable.

  • Remove the sweet potatoes from steam and let them cool for several hours or overnight.

  • Gently peel the skin from your sweet potatoes and place them on cutting board.

  • Slice sweet potatoes into ¼” discs or strips, keeping them the same thickness so that they cook evenly.

  • Place your sweet potato slices onto a dehydrator rack (or baking sheet).

  • Dehydrate at 150 to 175 degrees (or bake in oven at 175 to 200 degrees) for 4 hours, or until your slices are completely dehydrated. Frequently check on your sweet potatoes so that you don’t overcook. You can always add more time if needed.

  • Place your dehydrated sweet potatoes in an air-tight container and store in a cool dry place.

  • Enjoy! Yes, you too, human – you can enjoy these treats along with your furry friend!

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!
