If the past year or so has taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected. And be prepared for the worst. Be it wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes or floods, it’s important to have a plan that includes your pet. Knowing what types of emergencies are likely to occur in your area and being prepared for them can ensure the safety of your furry friend. Creating a plan and assembling an emergency kit for your pet today could help save their life tomorrow.
So, what should you consider when making a plan and building a kit? Here are some tips to help keep your pets safe!

CREATE AN EMERGENCY PLAN
- Familiarize yourself with the types of disasters that are common in your area and plan accordingly.
- Identify a safe place where you and your pet can stay in the event you have to evacuate, including with friends, relatives and at pet-friendly hotels.
- Create a buddy system with a trusted neighbor who can check on your pets and evacuate them if necessary.
- Find a boarding facility, veterinarian or animal hospital outside of your immediate area that can provide temporary shelter for your pet during an emergency.

PREPARE AN EMERGENCY KIT
- Food and water for at least seven days (rotate every two months)
- Medications and supplements for seven days
- First-aid kit and pet emergency pocket guide
- Travel bowls
- Crate or carrier that is sturdy and roomy
- Extra collars, leashes and harnesses (with ID tags)
- Beds and blankets for each pet
- Identification and medical records (including vaccination records and current photo)
- Waste bags or disposable litter box and cleaning supplies
- Comfort items (familiar toys, treats and bedding)

STAY INFORMED
- Identify how local authorities will notify you during a disaster. Determine how you will receive vital information (e.g., local radio, television, NOAA Weather Radio stations).
- Learn the different severe weather alerts. Understand the difference between “watches” and “warnings” and what actions to take in each situation.
- Take a pet first aid online training course to learn the basics of providing first aid care for your dog – or cat!
- Share your knowledge with family, friends, and neighbors – and encourage them to stay informed too.
