They say inspiration strikes in the morning, over a steaming cup of coffee and a quiet mind. For me, it crashed through my backyard on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon. My Dalmatian Pepper—a tornado of spots and boundless energy—had just gotten her paws on one of my toddlers’ lime green rubber balls. We had just gotten the ball a few short days prior, and of course it was fair game when it was accidentally left out in Pepper’s territory: the backyard.
As I finally accepted the fact that another kids’ toy has been commandeered by Pepper, I paused. Pepper wasn’t just a destructor; she was a spark. Watching her deflate that ball with one swift bite, I wondered: what if we designed a ball that looked plump and playful but could intentionally deflate just enough for a dog to carry comfortably? Not some flimsy chew toy or a heavy rubber ball, but an invention that could take a beating and keep on bouncing.
That night, with Pepper sprawled out, tired from the day’s excitement, I flipped open my laptop. It had to be lightweight yet tough, bouncy yet resilient—a tall order for any material. That’s when the AirTuff material came to mind. If you’ve ever laced up a high-end running shoe, you’ve felt a similar material in those cushy, springy soles. Unlike traditional foam, AirTuff is a closed-cell structure, steam-molded into tiny, elastic beads that give it a unique blend of flexibility and strength. We’d been experimenting with it in the ZippyPaws lab for months, tweaking its density for pet toys. I envisioned a soccer ball: the most played sport in the world. The trick was dialing in the thickness—too thin, and it’d shred under Pepper’s relentless chomping; too thick, and it won’t bounce back.
We got to work. The team fine-tuned the formulation, landing on a precise wall thickness after many prototypes. That sweet spot let the ball compress under bite pressure—deflating just enough for easy carrying—while its molecular resilience snapped it back to full shape once the jaws let go. The material’s low density kept it light, so I wouldn’t be worried about my toddlers throwing it at a window and I can kick it around barefoot with a much-needed coffee in one hand. The unique material is also malleable, so when a dog’s teeth sink in, it can bounce back somewhat, with less chance of puncturing the toy itself.
The result? The AirTuff Soccer Ball—a fun ball that looks ready for the pitch but plays by a dog’s rules.
Testing it with Pepper was the real proof. She bolted across the yard, caught it high in the air, and her head whipped it back and forth on her run back.
The ball bounced back to its original shape when she dropped it at my feet for round two. It was love at first chomp.
This isn’t just a toy; it’s one of my favorite inventions. And it’s a natural fit for our partnership with the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC). Picture it: soccer fans and their pups, united by a ball that’s as durable as their team spirit.

From Pepper’s backyard heist to a game-changing design, the AirTuff Soccer Ball is proof that sometimes the best ideas come with a tired mom’s last nerve.
Please note that the soccer ball in the video is a prototype and the official AirTuff Soccer Ball is black with gold and white specks.
